About Herbert’s Horses
Hi, I’m Cathy Herbert. I breed, raise, and show reining horses. My goal is to produce great prospects and show horses that start out strong and then go on to long careers. I got into this by accident, when I walked out into a field one day and saw a great prospect. I bought him for $10K, turned down $125K, and finally sold him for a great price–Mifillenium, now in Italy. I used the money I made to buy some nice mares and establish my own program. I’ve had most of the mares since they were young horses and know them well: strengths, weaknesses, conformation, training, if they are best suited for open or non-pro (or both). I try to learn as much as possible about the nuances of their bloodlines. I want the horses I breed and raise to be strong, sound, and physically talented enough to easily do what is asked of them.
I know that a lot of stallions make it on hype, and I try to learn the “back story” and avoid bloodlines/individuals that have issues (no matter how big the ads!). I look for quality, not fad and fashion, and try to ensure that every foal born in my program will be pretty, correct, athletic, and predisposed to soundness.
I don’t have a fancy farm. There’s no long driveway, no big indoor, no trainer on my payroll. My emphasis is on young horses. I like to sell them as 2 year olds at prices that enable me to make a profit and also let the buyer have a chance to make an even better profit. I want a win-win situation for everyone: me, the buyer, and–most of all–for the horse.
I’ve been involved with horses for most of my life, and I learned a ton about bloodlines, conformation, and what makes great horses as an editor for Practical Horseman, Horse & Rider, and the NRHA Reiner. For H&R, I did the conformation clinic, and had the opportunity to pick the brains of great horsemen and horsewomen each month.
